Welcome to the Riverview Middle School Science Department. Below you will find the Science course descriptions for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade.

SCIENCE 6 (002060)

Grade 6 science is the first in a sequence of three middle school courses. The major  emphasis is on earth science with the integration of life and physical science. Content at  grade 6 includes major ideas relevant to energy in the Earth’s system, hydrology,  minerals and rocks, plate tectonics, shaping the earth’s surface, geologic history, natural  resources and ecology. Investigation and use of the scientific method is emphasized  along with scientific thinking processes and skills.

Themes will be used to integrate the concepts of different scientific disciplines in ways  that reinforce the importance of understanding ideas. Major themes include energy,  patterns of change, scale and structure, stability, systems and interactions.

SCIENCE 7 (002070)

Grade 7 science is the second in a sequence of three middle school courses with emphasis  on life science and integration of physical principles and earth processes. Content at grade  7 includes major ideas about cells, viruses, protists, plants, animals, ecology, cell  reproduction, genetics and evolution. Science and health are combines in a systematic  study of the human body, including human reproduction, sexuality, sexually transmitted  diseases and drug abuse. Science attitudes, thinking processes, skills and application of  science and technology to social problems and personal decision making are studies.  Some content areas may have more in depth focus than other areas.

SCIENCE 8 (002280)

Grade 8 science is the third in a sequence of middle school courses emphasizing  physical science with appropriate linkages to earth and life sciences. Content at grade 8  includes: characteristics of matter, elements and atoms, compounds and mixtures,  chemical reactions, chemistry of living things, force and motion, and earth in the solar  system. Science literacy should emphasize attitudes, scientific processes, skills and  applications of science by asking meaningful questions.

Themes will be used to integrate the concepts of different scientific disciplines in ways  that reinforce the importance of understanding ideas.
