Welcome to the Riverview Middle School Math Department. Below are Math course descriptions for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade.

 

MATHEMATICS 

Students are provided with a mathematical education based on the Common Core  Standards. * Note: Students will be placed in math classes based on test scores, grades,  teacher recommendation, and standardized assessments. 

 

MATHEMATICS 6 (001060) 

This course is aligned with the California Common Core State Standards for 6th grade  mathematics. The emphasis is on (1) connecting ration and rate to whole number  multiplication and division, and using concepts of ration and rate to solve problems; (2)  completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notation of number  to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers; (3) writing,  interpreting, and using expressions and equations; and (4) developing understanding of  statistical thinking. Students develop the ability to communicate, understand, and  critique mathematical reasoning through problem solving using higher order thinking  skills. Students will continue to develop their use of the eight mathematical practices in  their learning process: (1) Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them; (2)  Reason abstractly and quantitatively; (3) Construct viable arguments and critique the  reasoning of others; (4) Model with Mathematics; (5) Use appropriate tools strategically; (6) Attend to precision; (7) Look for and make use of structure; (8) Look for and express  regularity in repeated reasoning.  

Purpose: To learn fundamental concepts of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division,  whole numbers, integers, decimals and fractions through the strands of mathematics:  number sense, geometry, algebra and functions, measurement, logic, probability and  statistics, continued review and emphasis on basics. Problem solving strategies,  computational skills and understanding of concepts will be emphasized. 

 

 

MATH 7 (001171) 

This course is aligned with the California Common Core State Standards for 7th grade  mathematics. The emphasis is on (1) developing understanding of and applying  proportional relationships; (2) developing understanding of operations with rational  numbers and working with expressions and linear equations; (3) solving problems  involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions, and working with two and three-dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume; and (4) drawing inferences about populations based on samples. Students  develop the ability to communicate, understand, and critique mathematical reasoning  through problem solving using higher order thinking skills. Students will continue to  develop their use of the eight mathematical practices in their learning process: (1) Make  sense of problems and persevere in solving them; (2) Reason abstractly and  quantitatively; (3) Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others; (4)  Model with Mathematics; (5) Use appropriate tools strategically; (6) Attend to precision;  (7) Look for and make use of structure; (8) Look for and express regularity in repeated  reasoning.  

This course provides the student with the math knowledge, concepts and skills identified in the Common Core Standards. Emphasis is on providing a thorough, in depth foundation in the five pre-algebra math strands (i.e., number sense, algebra and  functions, measurement and geometry, statistics, data analysis and probability, and  mathematical reasoning) to enable students to be successful in 8th grade math or  Algebra I. This course will develop all of the pre-algebra standards, with an emphasis  on the seventeen key standards. The ability to communicate mathematical reasoning  and understanding will be incorporated into all math topics. Valley View M.S. 

MATH 8 (001306) 

This course is aligned with the Common Core Standards for 8th grade mathematics. The  emphasis is on transitioning from concrete, basic math skills to abstract algebraic,  geometric and statistical concepts. Students collect, model, and analyze data and patterns  in real-world and career-related situations. They develop the ability to communicate,  understand, and critique mathematical reasoning through reading, writing, and  speaking. Students focus on math specific study skills, perseverance, and attention to  precision, preparation for success in high school mathematics (Algebra I). 

 

ALGEBRA I (001310) 

This course covers the full 25 Common Core Standards for Algebra I. Emphasis is on  writing, solving, and graphing linear and quadratic equations. The ability to  communicate mathematical reasoning and understanding will be incorporated in all the  topics. In addition, algebraic skills and concepts are developed and used in a wide variety  of problem solving situations. This course is a College Prep course, in order to earn  credit for an A-G requirement for UC/CSU Universities; students must earn at least a  “C” or better in each of the four quarters.
