Welcome to Riverview August 2010

Dear Riverview Families and Community Members:

Welcome back!  I hope you all had a wonderful summer.  My name is Christine Huajardo and I have the honor of being the new principal at Riverview Middle School.  For the past seven years, I have been a Vice Principal in the Mt. Diablo School district and for the past year have been the Vice Principal at Riverview.  I am so excited to work at such an outstanding school with such wonderful students, staff and families.  Realizing that change is never easy and that it is hard to lose such a wonderful principal that families have worked with for several years, I truly hope that the parents of Riverview Middle School realize that they will continue to be well taken care of under my direction.

School begins this year on Wednesday, August 25th.   Consistent attendance is very important; it’s a fact that students who attend school regularly learn more and are more successful in school than students who do not.  Parents who make regular school attendance a priority also are helping their children learn to accept responsibility which is an important lesson for a successful life.  We expect all students to arrive at school 10 minutes before the day begins.  School begins at 7:55 and we ask that you have your child here at 7:45.  Thank you for your support with this.

Our After School Program will continue to have support for all students who need help in English and Math, as well as comprehensive enrichment and sports program.  The Afterschool Program will support your child’s success and it is encouraged that they attend regularly.  Applications will be available during Viking Camp and several of our students will be invited to participate this year.  We need families to take advantage of this opportunity for our children.

Students are expected to be in uniform each day.  Students are allowed to wear blue, black or khaki uniform shorts, skirts or pants and white, gray or blue collared shirts.  Jeans are not acceptable!  All undergarments must be white, gray, black or blue.   Parents can purchase uniforms at Uniform Direct in Antioch or Concord or at any stores where uniforms are sold.

Viking Camp is scheduled for Tuesday, August 17th for 6th graders from 3:00pm to 7:00pm and Thursday August 19th for 7th and 8th graders from 3:00pm to 7:00pm.  During Viking Camp you will be able to purchase (cash only) yearbooks, order PE clothes, receive student schedules and meet staff.  This year, fall school pictures will be taken during Viking Camp by Lifetouch Photography.

How can I help my student?Let your child know that you expect him/her to attend school every day. Explain that, just as you have a job, it’s his/her job to go to school and learn.  Set a time for doing homework each evening and a time for going to bed.  Unfinished homework and too little sleep are common reasons why parents hear the words, “I don’t feel good,” on school mornings.    Have your child read for twenty minutes each night. Get involved with your child’s school – you, the parents, play a vital role in the success of your child.   It is our goal to offer an excellent education where diversity of learning styles is honored and where individual differences are respected. Educating the complete child is important to their success.

I look forward to seeing everyone at Viking Camp on Tuesday, August 17th from 3:00pm to 7:00pm for 6th graders and Thursday August 19th from 3:00pm to 7:00pm for 7th and 8th graders.

Sincerely,

Christine Huajardo

Principal
